Creating New Colours
Grade level: Grade 1
Subject: Science
General Learning Objective: Identify and evaluate methods for creating color and for applying colors to different materials.
Specific Learning Objective: Predict and describe changes in color that result from the mixing of primary colors and from mixing a primary color with white or with black.
Description of Activity:
Students (working in pairs) will access the following website and choose two colors to mix, record on a work sheet their prediction of what color they think it will form, and then actually go ahead and mix them using the game on the website (http://www.bbc.co.uk/cbbc/games/colour-factory-game). Once this lesson has been completed the students could experiment with mixing real paint colors.
Rational for Computer Integration:
Computers have been integrated into this lesson to allow students to experiment with colors for the first time easily and without a mess. In many schools paint resources to fill a whole class are hard to come by. This lesson ensures that students are getting the knowledge of creating colors without necessarily needing many resources. Once students know what to expect from mixing colors on this website they can utilize real paint to prove their understanding and their painting could be posted on the wall.
